U.S. Virgin Islands Warns Of Possible Water Contamination Near Hovensa Oil Refinery

U.S. Virgin Islands health authorities say people who live near the Hovensa LLC oil refinery should avoid drinking water from any cisterns because of possible contamination. Officials who inspected the communities of Clifton Hill and Fredensborg on the island of St. Croix say they found droplets of oil on the ground and are issuing the warning as a precaution. The announcement came Friday, a day after at least 16 students and teachers from a high school near the refinery were taken to a hospital after being exposed to hydrocarbon fumes. Hovensa blamed the problem on a malfunctioning valve. Hovensa is a joint venture of New York-based Hess Corp. and Petroleos de Venezuela, SA. ((10 DEC 2010))
