Oil Leak Shuts Down Trans-Alaska Pipeline

The trans-Alaska oil pipeline has been shut down after pipeline workers discovered a spill at Pump Station 1 Saturday morning. Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. said the 800-mile line that carries about 630,000 barrels of oil a day between the North Slope and Valdez was shut down just before 9 a.m. Pump Station 1 is at Prudhoe Bay. Alyeska said in a press release the leak appeared to be from a section of piping at the station that is encased in concrete. The leak was discovered when workers saw oil in the building next to that section of pipe. Steve Rinehart, a BP spokesman, one of Alaska’s three major oil producers, said his company has been working throughout the day to “safely and methodically shut in and freeze protect” North Slope production facilities. He said the North Slope oil producers are cutting back production by 95 percent for an indefinite period of time. The spill appeared to be contained although efforts to stop the leak were still underway late Saturday afternoon, according to the press release, and the pipeline operator was bringing in “additional resources” to help with containment, recovery and repair. The company did not say how much oil was believed to have spilled and a spokeswoman for Alyeska did not immediately return a phone call seeking additional information. Rinehart described the process of dialing back production as one that needed to be done carefully — and slowly — so as not to damage equipment. He couldn’t recall the last time production had been reduced by 95 percent but said it’s not uncommon for production to be slowed for a few days when, for instance, tankers can’t get in to the port at Valdez because of bad weather.
