Keystone XL —- Senator Mike Johanns: Construction Needs to Be Delayed

Johanns on XL Pipeline: Construction “Needs to Be Delayed.” As the Canadian company looking to build the controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline announces the backing of several dozen American veterans, Senator Mike Johanns (NE-R) tells Nebraska Watchdog he believes construction “will be delayed, it needs to be delayed.” In an on camera interview (see video below) with Nebraska Watchdog, Johanns ramps up his earlier concerns that TransCanada appears unwilling to reroute the XL and avoid the ecologically sensitive Sandhills and Ogallala Aquifer through Nebraska. If TransCanada refuses to budge Johanns expects the State Department will require additional environmental reviews of the pipeline’s location. Meanwhile TransCanada has announced the names of 66 veterans who signed a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, urging Mrs. Clinton to give the XL an immediate go-ahead. According to the letter, which was sent in the middle of uprisings in several oil rich countries, the veterans say they have “dedicated our lives to protecting and serving this great country, we feel it is incumbent upon us to reinforce how vital the Keystone XL pipeline is to reducing America’s dependence on oil from less stable regions of the world.” According to an examination by Nebraska Watchdog of the 66 names listed, 13 are from states crossed by the pipeline; 5 of the 13 are from Nebraska. Last month TransCanada announced the support of 30 members of Congress. Nebraska Watchdog confirmed that of those 30, seven live in XL Pipeline states, and none were from Nebraska. ((07 MAR 2011))
